High School FAQs
What teaching methods are used in Calvary's High School classrooms?
In Calvary’s High School classrooms Socratic seminars are used to create an environment that engages students to shape their own learning. Teachers also utilize simulations to create an engaging learning environment, while assumptions are challenged to foster critical thinking and deeper learning. Field trips and hands-on learning is commonplace at Calvary, even in our High School.
How does Calvary help students plan for their post-secondary education?
Calvary matches students with a post-secondary option that best fits their aspirations and abilities. We provide various resources, including grade-level specific lessons on college readiness beginning in 9th grade, on-campus PSAT and SAT testing followed by individualized conferences, college visits, and guidance through the college and scholarship application process.
How does Calvary help students expand their career aspirations?
Calvary administers interest inventories twice during high school to help students explore different career fields and hosts monthly Nourish and Flourish lunch sessions with professionals to learn about the various industries they represent and the educational path that took them there.
How does Calvary incorporate spiritual development into students’ daily life?
Calvary requires students to take two semesters of theology instruction. Additionally, students participate in leadership roles during weekly Chapel services where the school celebrates its Episcopal Identity. Along with Christian Character Education and service-learning Calvary students are exposed to regular conversations that strengthen their individual beliefs.
How do Calvary students give back?
We believe that Calvary students are called to a higher standard, and we incorporate community service into our curriculum. High School students are expected to earn 30 hours per year of community service and 120 hours over a four-year period. Students that complete 160 hours earn a service cord at graduation. At least once per year, the whole high school takes part in a group service project. Their non-profit of choice is “Three Little Pitties” where they help build kennels, clean facilities and interact with the puppies.
With Calvary being small, how do students get enough socialization?
Building a family culture is a very important part of our High School program. Each month students take part in off-campus activities including, but not limited to, rock climbing, escape rooms, trampoline park, roller skating, hayrides, etc. A highlight in the spring is Calvary’s annual prom. In addition, Calvary participates in programs that reach beyond the classroom including Student Council at the district and state level, TAPPS Vocal, Band, Art, Cross Country and One Act Play competitions, Thespian Festival, athletics, Youth In Philanthropy, and more. Calvary offers many organized social opportunities and students are encouraged to participate.
Will my child be academically and socially prepared for college?
Calvary alumni consistently come back and tell us that because of Calvary’s high level of academics, and amazing teachers, they were able to easily navigate college life. Although Calvary has small class sizes, students have the skills to enter a much larger environment. They are competent in their knowledge, and they have study skills and confidence that make them successful.
